It’s always time to relax at jeweller Elise Compson’s showroom in Tadcaster.
Her boutique, By Elise, is a showcase for her own glorious jewellery. There are ropes of freshwater pearls threaded with crystal, coral, turquoise and watercolour gems, bearing silver crosses, inlaid with more jewels, or filigree hearts, or simple, massive stones set in silver. They hang around the necks of mannequins or lie piled in tactile heaps on the French furniture that fills the room.
Something about Elise makes a statement – she knows what makes a woman look good. Born in the UK, raised in the West Indies and Africa and having worked in Hong Kong she admits to being a born shopper, a shopkeeper and a successful designer of her own jewellery.
It’s a pretty room. On the floor lie suede slippers and bright leather bags. Kimonos and shawls drape over chairs; the cabinets are full of tiny picture frames and keepsake boxes, and on the walls are delicate pastels, mirrors and decorative objects – that you’d just like to pick up and carry off home. It’s like a sweet shop for grown ups.
Tadcaster, she says, gives her customers free parking, and somewhere away from the archetypal busy shopping arcade, where they can take time out with a coffee or glass of wine.
